Seborrheic Dermatitis Treatment

What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?

This a common condition of the skin. It is a red scaly rash that usually occurs on areas of the skin with abundant oil glands. This includes the scalp, eyebrows, nose, ears, and the middle of the chest. Less commonly, it can be seen under the arms and breasts, and even in the groin.

What Causes Seborrheic Dermatitis?

The cause of it is not known. A yeast-like organism that lives in the oily skin may play a role. Doctors think it may be due to a combination of hormone levels, weakened immune system, lack of certain nutrients, or nervous system problems. Irritation from a yeast called Malassezia may also lead to this condition. This does appear to run in families.

How Do I Treat Seborrheic Dermatitis?

There is no cure for it; however, there are several ways to keep it under control.

Medicated shampoos can be prescribed.

  • A mild cortisone cream may be prescribed.
